Tom Carr was born in Belfast in 1909, where he showed an early interest in art, which was encouraged by his grandfather. He enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1927. He participated in the Objective Abstractions exhibition at the Zwemmer Gallery in London in 1933, and in 1935, he held his first one-person exhibition in Canterbury. He continued to exhibit until 1993.
